HYMENOPLASTY

Hymenoplasty or hymen reconstruction surgery is the surgical restoration of the hymen. The term comes from the Greek words hymen meaning "membrane", and raphḗ meaning "suture". This is a safe and effective procedure which can be done under local anaesthesia and is usually a day care procedure. Patients are advised to avoid sexual exposure for few weeks following the procedure.

FAQS ON HYMENOPLASTY

1. What is hymenoplasty? What are the reasons which cause hymen to tear?

Hymen is a thin fragile piece of vaginal mucosa (membrane) that is stretched across the opening of your vagina. As this is a thin and fragile tissue, it can be easily torn during heavy sporting activities like gymnastics, horse-riding, cycling, other causes include use of tampons, premarital sexual intercourse or upon a heavy fall. Bleeding may or may not be always there during tearing of the hymen tissue.

2. Can the Hymen be restored to normal after the procedure?

Well Hymen cannot really be restored – simply re-created through surgery we call, Hymenoplasty. This is such a fragile tissue that’s why cannot be 100 percent as an original tissue. The Recreated Hymen may or may not bleed when torn later.

3. Describe the Hymenoplasty procedure?

This procedure involves either stitching up of the various layers or parts of hymen if present especially in cases of partially torn hymen. After stitching, it looks like a small ‘ring’ and will fuse back together to look like the original hymen. The small hole will be small enough to, on your wedding night, tear and may or may not bleed as it may have done in the first place. In other cases, a small flap is made out of the vaginal lip lining and a hymen is created out of the same. The entire procedure is done under local anaesthesia and is almost painless.

4. How long does the procedure take? Will I have too much of pain during recovery period? Are there any complications?

The procedure usually takes 30 -45 minutes and is done under local anaesthesia and is completely painless. Pain at/or around the surgical wound may be felt as soon as the anaestheticeffect wears off, which is quite mild and easily controlled by the pain killer medications prescribed to you. Some bleeding spots or clots might be there for 2-3 days but that shall settle themselves nothing to worry about. Antibiotics are prescribed and have to be taken for 5-7 days to prevent any postop infection. Other than that there are no complications for the above procedure.

5. What are the postop precautions or restrictions I need to take?

Postoperatively precautions are must to be followed to prevent the hymen from getting tor. All forms of physical exercise including swimming, cycling, squatting, etc…are a strict NO.. Also sexual intercourse is restricted for a period of 4-6 weeks. The first intercourse might be a bit more painful than usually.

6. What is the end result like?

You can expect a restored hymen. The hymen after your intercourse may or may not bleed but u will definitely experience a virgin like feeling during intercourse.
